Explains how to view and edit material cost estimates for make and buy parts
Finding your Material Estimate
All estimates are entered against a basis of estimate work breakdown structure element, or BOE-WBS for short. You can see the list of BOE-WBS in the estimating application. Add your own columns, filters, search, or select a pre-defined view to tailor the list of BOE-WBS to your own requirements.
- The proposal and BOE-WBS names are normally displayed first. You can of course change the columns visible or add/delete filters
- The BOE owner (e.g. you), design to cost target and current estimated cost may also be displayed, in the proposal currency. You can filter on BOE owner as yourself to limit the list to estimates that you are responsible for
- Estimates for labor (which includes make-part labor), purchased materials, travel, other direct costs and indirect costs are displayed in separate columns. To look for material estimates you can sort the list based on material estimated cost descending, as shown here. Click twice to change sort from ascending to descending or select "Sort - descending" from the column menu
- Double-click on any row or on the pencil to open an estimate.
Once you have opened an estimate which includes material, click on the material or PRODUCTION & PROCUREMENT tab (highlighted in the screenshot below) to view your material estimate for this BOE-WBS.
- You have two viewing options to choose from, viewing the indentured bill of material or BOM, or viewing the consolidated material requirements list or material estimates. Select the second radio-option as shown above to view your material estimates
- The table gives one row for each material estimate, or for each make or buy part number in this BOE-WBS. This table is display only - you edit by double-clicking on any row:
- Normally this is consolidated by part number, meaning that all occurrences of the same part with the proposal BOMs are consolidated into one material estimate. However it is sometimes possible for requirements for the same part to be split into several material costing proposals - for example due to options, similar-to materials or other lot-sizing rules
- The part code and description for each material estimate is often displayed first, along with the total estimated or fixed lot-size quantity, and the estimating method and source used to derive this part's cost estimate. Many other columns can be displayed on demand
- Sometimes a single BOE-WBS can contain a large number of parts, either because there are many client deliverables or the proposal bill of material is large and complex. Choose from the list of fields to filter your material cost estimate list by to narrow it down. The total number of filtered records is displayed towards the right side above this table
- You can also define or select from one of the pre-defined views, for example a view of just purchased parts vs. in-house manufactured parts
- The unit cost (cost for one unit of one part) and total cost (cost for all units of one part) is displayed
- Double click on any row to open the purchased or in-house manufactured material proposal popup to edit your cost estimate
- The costs for a single material estimate may be split into different proposal line item or BOM WBS elements underneath the single BOE-WBS, and/or into different years or months, according to how your proposal requirements are structured
- For in-house made parts you can also see extra columns with the hours for each work-center involved in that part's routing
- Click on the either of the two remarks bubbles to view either the estimating remarks - entered in the material proposal popup - or to view the costing log - which is updated by the system for trouble-shooting any issues when make or purchased parts are estimated.
