Copy a project when you want to quickly set-up a new project which is similar to an existing one.
Select the Project to Copy
To copy a project click on Tasks > Projects in the standard menu.
- Select the project you want to copy. Single-click on a row to select that project (double-clicking opens that project).
- Click on the copy button (two overlapping paper sheets) in the main toolbar on the right-side
Copied Project Details
You will be taken to the details page for the new project you are creating where you can see active data for the selected project copied into the new project.
- If the project code or ID is not system assigned it will have been cleared out for you to enter an ID for the new project.
- The old project description is copied with the word "(copy)" added to the end. It is recommended that you delete and re-enter the new project description.
- Open or incomplete tasks from the old project will have been copied into your new project. Every task ID will be blank and may need to be entered. Completed tasks are not copied and any actual hours or progress is not copied either.
- Modify your project dates. Bear in mind that you cannot save a project with tasks that fall outside the project start/end dates. Refer to project scheduling for more information on how to schedule the copied tasks to fall within your new project dates.
You can now make any other modifications to the new project, including resources, service rates, goals or phases, or save your new project to come back to later.
Making a Copy from Within Project Details

If you already opened the source project you wish to copy from, you can click on "Save as Copy" from the menu that comes when you hover the mouse over the Save button.
Save as a copy will create a brand new project, copying the open/active tasks and other relevant information. Just like when you copy a project from the search list, actuals or progress are not copied. Modify the new project type, leader, description or dates and reschedule the tasks as you feel is appropriate.
Also refer to Copying Documents for more information on copying.
