Explains how to Search for and Initiate an Estimate
How are Estimates Created
Estimates, also called "bases of estimates" or BOEs in short, are essentially WBS elements from the proposal which are marked as BOEs. Each BOE WBS is assigned an owner, the person responsible for completing and submitting that estimate based on the estimating workflow. Following the release of a BOE WBS the estimator uses the estimating application to complete one or more of:
- Labor estimates for non-recurring or project-based activities like engineering or software coding
- Travel estimates for resources
- Materials estimates for purchased material and for in-house produced parts, creating make-part labor estimates as a result
- Other direct cost estimates such as for subcontractors or insurance policies
Open the estimating application by clicking the main navigation ESTIMATES to view a list of estimates. You can filter the list for example only showing estimates you are the owner for, and you can change the columns which are displayed.
- Filter the list of estimates by any criteria you choose, such as BOE owner as yourself
- The description of each estimate is the same as the WBS description in the proposal app, which is itself often copied from a template. The WBS code is also displayed
- The proposal or quotation description and customer are displayed, since you might be working on estimates from several proposals at once
- Key information such as the design-to-cost target (DTC) and current cost estimate for estimates which are already in process, is displayed
- If you assigned risks or opportunities to your estimate, or risks were assigned to the proposal at the level of this BOE WBS, the total weighted cost of these risks & opportunties is displayed
- Estimates are assigned a confidence score based on the aggregated or average confidence weighted by cost of the individual items in that estimate. For example the confidence of each resource in a labor estimate is rolled-up and shown here as a % score
- Double-click any estimate to open it, or click on the pencil icon, or click the speech bubble to open an estimate in the COMMENTS tab
